Toronto, ON. December 3rd, 2020 — Through founding US partners, Tony Villani and Jamal Lewis, Scholars is partnering with former Clemson football player Ray McElrathbey to develop and launch a new financial literacy program. McElrathbey will collaborate with the Scholars curriculum development team to create a program dedicated to helping students foster a better understanding of personal finance topics.
McElrathbey was introduced to Scholars through Villani and Lewis, who ran a football camp that McElrathbey attended as a young athlete. Villani, founder of industry leading NFL training gym XPE Sports, and Lewis, former Baltimore Raven and Super Bowl Champion, have had an undeniable impact on McElrathbey. They have continued to act as mentors both on and off the field — their influence ultimately surpassed football and inspired him to partner with Scholars.
The financial literacy program will encourage youth to prepare themselves for the future, feel empowered, and understand the value of money. It will provide support to youth managing their personal finances and will complement other academic courses offered through Scholars.
McElrathbey’s year has been an exciting one, with Disney set to release a film inspired by his life and football career in December. The movie, titled Safety, tells the uplifting story of the Clemson community coming together to help raise McElrathebey’s younger brother, Fahmarr. McElrathbey took custody of his brother in 2006 in order to keep him out of the foster system, prompting the Clemson community to help the brothers through financial strain and more.
McElrathbey’s partnership with Scholars will equip youth with invaluable skills that will help them navigate the real world, adopt healthy financial habits, and manage more than just their course work.
